Pine Butte

In the summer of 2016, long after writing my book, I climbed Pine Butte in the Mazatzal Mts. to photograph the many large, colorful century plants that were visible from the bottom of the mountain. I can't say that I got any really great photos of the plants, but when I reached the summit I discovered the remnants of a huge stone pueblo. I don't know anything about this site other than it's there. About all I can say about the place is that it has all the characteristics of a prehistoric Native American hilltop ruin.

Pine Butte as seen from below (yes, those are transmission lines in the foreground).

Remains of a large stone room. There are many rooms at this site.

Part of a long, stone, apparently defensive wall surrounding the site.

Looking southeast toward the East Valley of the Phoenix-metro area.
